Study Plan
My one year study in *** will be divided into three parts:
I
The InterComm English Language Program
4 August----12 September 2003
Language Centre
II
MA in Communications Studies
22 September 2003----22 September 2004
Institute of Communications Studies
III
Independent investigation
Part I:The InterComm English Language Programme
This full-time programme is designed for the international graduates who have been accepted for a higher degree in Communications Studies and who require an intensive period of English language preparation before the start of their academic studies. The programme will introduce the methodology and analytical approach required for higher degree studies in ****. And it includes analysis and comparison of the language and treatment of current international and political issues in the media.
When I finish the InterComm English Language Programme I may achieve these strategic skills:
(1) researching and writing essays on topics relevant to Communications Studies
(2) effective reading of texts from academic books and journals and the daily press
(3) understanding lectures, TV and radio news coverage
(4) taking part in seminars and giving oral presentations
Part II: MA in Communications Studies
The MA programmes in Communications Studies offered by the Institute of Communications Studies is a full-time course. This programme includes six components which will form part of the final examination. The scheme of study consists of three core courses, two options and a dissertation or project. The three core courses are the Communications Revolution, Mass Media and Society, Technology and Communications. My favorite options are Global Television Culture and Art and Communications.
The way in which the modules making up programme are organized expects students to work independently for most of the time during our studies there. Module-related work involves preparation for classes, giving oral presentations, producing a large number of written essays and conducting an independent piece of research. I also regularly see my supervisors in personal tutorials to discuss my work. In addition, I will meet other students on a regular basis in organizing study groups to prepare for classroom assignments. Hence, although the contact hours of classroom teaching make up only 8 hours per week, the programme in fact requires students to work for about 40 hours per week.
When I finish the MA in Communications Studies I may achieve:
(1) theoretical understanding together with vocational skills to facilitate the analysis and management of communications strategies in local and international contexts.
(2) benefit from the most up-to-date thinking and practice
(3) develop a sensitivity to different cultural perspectives through learning in multicultural teams.
Part III: Independent investigation
I will visit some famous British media companies for example BBC, Granada Media and BskyB to learn their running method. In Britain the public broadcasting & television system is as important as the private television companies. This kind of situation is quite similar to Chinese situation. I will investigate the relationship between these two systems and the complementary affect.
Work Plan
After my one-year study in the **** , my solid academic standing will help me to be an independent producer. I will set up a company to produce different kinds of cultural programmes to introduce the changes happened in China, to focus on the conflicts between new and old. I believe that my rich experience in producing TV program would benefit to class discussing and culture exchange in future class at ****, and the outstanding teaching would help me to be an independent producer.
