VISA and entry regulations
for Switzerland and Liechtenstein
Dear Sir / Madam
Travellers wishing to enter Switzerland or Liechtenstein for the purpose of tourism, business trips and visits do NOT require a Swiss visa if they hold a valid:
“British Citizen”, “British Subject: Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies”, “British Protected Person”, “British Dependent Territories Citizen”, “British Overseas Citizen”, “British National (Overseas)”. Passports must be valid beyond the date of the departure from Switzerland.
2) TRAVEL DOCUMENTS:
- UK travel documents, issued to refugees by the Home Office, with blue cover, two black stripes
(gold stripes since 16.08.96) in the top left hand corner and mentioning agreement of 28 July 1951.
- LATVIA Aliens’ passports and UNMIK Travel Documents must be endorsed
with a UK permit as listed under point 5.
(Holders of the brown Certificate of Identity issued by the British Home Office as well as
holders of the red Travel Document issued by the British Home Office mentioning
agreement of 28 September 1954 require a visa.)
3) NATIONAL & OFFICIAL PASSPORT: of any of the following countries
Andorra Estonia Republic of Ireland Malta Slovakia
Australia Fiji Israel Monaco Slovenia
Austria Finland Italy Netherlands Solomon Islands
Belgium France Japan New Zealand South Africa, incl temp. ppt.
Brunei Germany Kiribati Norway South Korea
Bulgaria Greece Latvia Poland Spain
Croatia Hong Kong (HKSAR) Lithuania Portugal Sweden
Cyprus Hungary Luxembourg Romania Tuvalu
Czech Republic Macao (MSAR-ppt) San Marino Vatican
Denmark Iceland Malaysia Singapore
and all North / Central and South American countries including those in the West Indies (Caribbean Islands) with the exception of Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti and Peru.
4) OFFICIAL PASSPORTS:
Diplomatic passports: Albania, Algeria, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Iran, Macedonia, Moldavia, Morocco, Namibia, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Tunisia,Turkey, Ukraine.
Official Passports: Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Namibia, Philippines, Thailand.
Service passports: Algeria, Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Cuba, Dominican Republic, Macedonia, Moldavia, Morocco, Namibia, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine.
Special passports: Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Macedonia, Morocco, Peru, Tunisia, Turkey.
5) VALID NATIONAL PASSPORT WITH A RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR THE UK
REGARDLESS OF NATIONALITY:
Foreign nationals not exempt from obtaining a visa under paragraphs 1 to 4 do not require a visa for stays of max. 3 months in Switzerland, if they hold one of the following valid UK residence permits.
- Label: - UK Entry Clearance; issued for multiple entries.
(or with statement “Indefinite leave to enter the UK”,
even if the validity of the Entry Clearance has expired.)
- Residence Permit
- Certificate of entitlement to the right of abode
- Stamp or label with the statement: - indefinite period / given indefinite
- Stamp with the statement: - There is at present no time limit…
- a right of residence in the United Kingdom as a family
member of an EEA national or Swiss national
- Leave to enter the United Kingdom…(Condition:
residence for more than 6 months)
- Leave to remain in the United Kingdom……(Condition:
residence for more than 6 months)
- The holder has leave to enter/remain that was
granted on.. (Condition:residence for more than 6 months)
Depending on their nationality, a visa may still be required for members of diplomatic
and consular missions holding temporary residence permits with the endorsement
“Exempt Diplomatic”.
6) OTHER RESIDENCE PERMITS
Nationals holding a valid authorisation to live in EU or EFTA states, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Canada or the USA might not require a Swiss visa. In these cases, please contact the Swiss Embassy/Consulate responsible for your place of residence.
7) NATIONAL & OFFICIAL PASSPORT WITH SCHENGEN VISA:
Nationals of the following countries do not require a visa to travel to Switzerland if they hold a passport valid for three months after leaving Switzerland, endorsed with a multi-entry Schengen visa, valid for all Schengen states:
Bahrain Qatar Thailand
Kuwait Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates
Oman Taiwan (Republic of China, ordinary passports only)
If you do not fulfil the above conditions you have to obtain a Swiss visa.
Please note that the visa application must be submitted to the Swiss Mission responsible for your place of residence. A visa application not submitted to the correct Swiss Mission may be rejected.
General Information
Duration of stay
Foreign nationals who are not engaged in gainful activity can reside in Switzerland for a period of up to three months without a residence permit. Tourists and business visitors who travel repeatedly to Switzerland but stay less than three months each time must apply for a residence permit if their total stay exceeds six months within a period of twelve months.
